Sensory workshop notes

Sensory workshop 21/10/20

Anxiety is a natural response to stress.  It’s a feeling of fear or apprehension

about what's to come.

Distress means the state of being in great trouble.

Distress implies an external and usually temporary cause of great physical

or mental strain and stress.

Self regulation can be defined as a person's ability to adjust their level of

alertness and show emotions to achieve goals using an adaptive manner.

Important to remember: A child’s behaviour is not always what it seems.

CONSIDER          What we don’t see… what’s underneath?

Key classroom practices for dealing with traumatised children:

  • Understand the child

  • Manage your own reaction

  • I see you need help with….

  • Structure and consistency

  • Time in not time out

  • Consequences not punishments

  • Connect

  • Acknowledge good decisions and choices

  • Support parents and carers

(Guided observations to record what you notice -

then look at ways of reducing them).

FIND STRESSORS   =    REDUCE THEM

FIND UNMET NEEDS     =    MEET THEM

FIND SKILL DEFICITS      =     TEACH THEM

Syndicate meeting reflections

After discussions and analysing my target students I came up with these actions:

Syndicate reflection

Today we had a great senior syndicate meeting, we now have an agenda to keep us on track and focused.
Topics we covered are:
Teacher wellbeing;

Planning documents for topic/inquiry.  We decided to all use the doc. Rob shared and then alter this and add it to the master files planning file.

Target students and how we report on these, we streamlined how our format would look and made sure it was covering what we need.  This then flowed onto our reporting format and how we have gone with our different report/consultation with whanau this year - big discussion around making sure these reports are cohesive and we then looked at term 4 report format and tweaked this.

Student behaviour also came up and we revisited the document with behaviours and levels/consequences that we had made as a staff a few years previous.
We decided that this needs to be a whole staff conversation and that we would look at this next week at staff meeting.

Lastly we said we need to do a blog post on our teachers inquiry EVERY syndicate meeting as we all find this is being neglected.

DFI - Computational Thinking - Day 8

Today Dorothy started off with some background around how to empower students.
It makes sense not using the term agency.

This is the slide she shared Empowered slide

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
I guess this slide above sums up what I have learnt today, its helping my students make connections, making sure they can use my class site effectively and be able to learn at home - overcoming the biggest barrier of distance in the current climate.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
Just keep on trying and using those programs or apps that I am not comfortable using, and to continue using the ones I am as this will embed the new skills I have found.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Coding - I think one student is already ahead of me by miles here, I told Kerry this morning about him and the things he is doing on Blender.  Amazing...

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

DFI - Devices

Today I learnt about using hapara more effectively from Dorothy.  This was great because I have been meaning to learn more about this since teaching back in the senior school.

We also had to do the digital dig again which was good to go through, we had started it with Donna but Rob's class (who were starting up with their brand new chrome books) only got through 2 slides.  So this was great to revisit.  I need to continue doing this... I actually had this timetabled into my weekly plan - so students were to do 20 minutes of cybersmart on Thursday.

Then with Gerhard he introduced us to ipads and how the junior school would use them.  The video (kawa of care) was awesome and it would be cool to make our own one for the school.
Expalin everything tutorial was great. These are the things we had to learn to do:

In the afternoon we did looked at screencasify, I have been having a bit of a play with this and did two last week for my students.  I made one with a funny video that I was sent about toilet paper and dominos, the kids loved this and used it for writing inspiration.  The second one didn't work as well and the sound went off the video (not the screen recording - just the video) so I need to keep having a go with this.

We also looked at our blogs, It was a bit fast for me when Kerry was talking and so I need to go back and try to add a page and change my blog layout.

Time to reflect and share with colleagues

  • What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
Keep up with the cybersmart tips especially on a chromebook so I know what it is like for my students.
  • What did I learn that could be used with my learners? Make sure the kids are keeping up to date with
  • cybersmart ideas and mahi.
  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

DFI - Day 3 MEDIA

Started the Day with WWW to refresh what worked well, what I need help/support with.

Then we had another hangout with Anne Sinclair - she talked about the concept of create.  She is super passionate about this area.

Students are the centre of learning.

She talked about how significant this is in the north especially with Elwyn Richardsons work at Oruaiti.
Creating clay pots then making a kiln to Glaze the pots...

What is sisomo?   SIght SOund and MOtion...

What can I do to foster creativity in my classroom??? Anne asks.... she suggests we watch the videos..  videos about create

Then we had a hangout with Kent.

He took us through live streaming...  see this Slide that he showed us... no longer possible on youtube

Type PNG to get an image with no background....

Great ideas on google draw 2nd slide examples

Then we started doing google draw which was cool, this was my first attempt.

then we worked with slides...

This could work really well for my class and I will start using it. Here is my first example

To embed/ upload this slide I went to the slide - file - publish to web - change the size to small.... then go to embed screen ctrl C the embed code and then go to blog.  change to HTML top left and add the code into the blog where ever you want it to show up.

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy, particularly the Create element from today’s presentation? I learnt heaps about create - really loved the google draw examples and the google slides. I can see both of these working really well in my class.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional? Doing the hangouts again was way better this time, we were all really quick and did it in no time at all- even managed to take a video with sound this time around.  Jess will share this with me when she has it downloaded.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
The google draw and google slides, I even want to try and do a hangout with my school kit class down in Fielding, at Fielding Intermediate.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
rewinding to some of the things I had forgotten the last two weeks.  For example the PNG rule when looking for images, also embedding clips/movies and slides.   Creating a google hangout.

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy,
particularly the Learn element from today’s presentation?
So much - was another week of fast learning, the powhiri from Paparoe was amazing and also the intro from Anne.  All the google slides are really good but I need to make sure I go and use them or I will forget.  Hangouts are great.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
That I need to go and refresh from all the slides so that I use it with ease.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Could try Hangouts with the class we are sending our school kit poems too, even though it says it is tricky with a group of poeple.

Day 1 - Introductions  Intro slides

The four goals of DFI see slide show  Slide about DFI

Learn create and share came before digital fluency: established 2006
The first goals/outcomes from the original leaders of Manaiakalani were:

email for this group is dfi-northland-cohort-1-2020@manaiakalani.org

CHEAT SHEETS for google test
Learn for google test
groups.google.com
mail.google.com
slides.google.com
open a new tab...

About groups 2  notes: dont set up class groups - Hapara does this already.
Check what name you call your group with senior management.

Create a group called 3 bio spiny urchins ctrl c and paste this name
invite members - start typing the email addresses....
Directly add these members don't click invite....

use this guy on youtube to help making google groups slide 20
Drive set up:
colour code folders
put * next to folders to be at top of list
search for folder name in search and then advance search - then say location or time

Google Doc set up
always name doc with initials so you can see each childs work as they share it.
Set up with the class is important - use hapara to check if they are naming the doc correctly and saving it into folders.

To copy and paste make sure you choose format options to keep format the same. ctrl/shift/c
Voice typing under tools. ctrl/shift/s
Highlight and change headings
Make a table of contents after making headings - this will auto. make these headings in the table of contents.

word counts - good for competition for kids - ctrl/shift/c under tools

To add comments to certain people - highlight the topic you are asking them about then click comment button and then shift + will show contacts.  then assign to that email address.

Creating google docs/images/poster

get rid of background by googling https://www.remove.bg/upload

then up load the picture and it will automatically remove the background.

  1. What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy? Heaps... got a even better understanding of how Manaiakalani was established and how the need arose. Nice backstory...
  2. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional? Keep my drive organised, I do try... also need to sort my emails and delete stuff more regularly. Keep trying the new tips with google docs.
  3. What did I learn that could be used with my learners?  I liked the remove background tool, I want my class to do this themselves so they can add new profile pics to their blogs.
  4. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life? To keep google drive sorted at home also... maybe organise emails into better folders for accounts to pay etc.
