Alim Impact day

Today we shared our Alim results and presentations of how it ran in our schools.

Here is the slideshow I presented.

We then did some fun activities that involved group work and collaborating...  this was when we got into groups of 4 and raced to circle numbers in order... (look on Diane's slide show for the sheet)
https://www.saravanderwerf.com/100-numbers-to-get-students-talking/

A TASK to get every group to look like this Day 3 of school.

If I am going to get students to talk every day of class, then I need to teach them how to work in groups and teach them how to talk to one another.  This is my goal week one of school.  Lots of years ago, Beth Esposito gave me this task (I think it is an AVID task) that I’ve adapted.  It is magic.  It makes groups look like the pics above with little effort on my part.  I’ve used this activity in both middle and high school and it works great at both levels.  Here is the task.  I call it the 100# task.
Other teachers then discussed good websites they have used.

Diane shared https://mathforlove.com/ website with her tiny polka dot game.

Staff meeting around strategic planning with Sue Holmes

First we all did a kahoot to see what we know about our school and the curriculum.
This was a good way to highlight that we really need to look at the front of the curriculum document again.

You will know you are successful when you have:

  • Understood what is involved in developing a local curriculum
  • identified the priorities from initial scoping/leadership meetings
  • Recalled key elements from the front end of NZC

It was good to hear that we need to make sure when teaching that "the long view is taken: each students ultimate learning success is more important than the covering of particular achievement objectives"  Pg 39

Sue was working with Diane and they highlighted areas that we need to work on and areas we are already achieving.

Discussing around our community involvement consultation is very important.

Manaiakalani staff meeting around sharing

Today we were learning about sharing and how we do this these days and what it looks like...
Some questions to ponder were...
How do you prefer to SHARE?

Does it make a difference whether the content you are sharing is happy or sad, positive or negative?

Does it make a difference whether it is personal or professional, whether it includes others or only yourself?

Has this changed in recent years? If so, how?

If not, why do you think that is?
I was sitting with another teacher and we both agree it is totally dependent on what kind of conversation you are sharing, if we have some negative/sad news we are more likely to do this face to face...

Then we looked at examples of how we share.  We had to plot on the graph if we used the following:

1:1 eg face to face
1: Group eg family, class
<30 people
1:crowd eg hall or auditorium 30 - 1000s
1: world  global

Feedback from Reading Observations.

Reading Observation Jorja Walden Monday 19th August.

My goal is:
  •  to develop appropriate routines and procedures.
  • To form small groups of students who are similar in their development of a reading process and read at the same level of text so that I can teach them in guided reading.

Thank you for having us in your room today.

From our observations it is evident that:

  • Students in your classroom are given small group instruction
  • Groups meet regularly, and strategies and skills taught are based on assessment
  • Appropriate texts are selected to meet the needs of the students
  • Learning transfers to other situations (string activity)
  • Rotation activities are clearly signposted
  • You are developing appropriate routines and procedures

Future Focus

How could you provide more effective follow up activities that build on the guided reading lesson?

Coaching reflections with Sue

Here are my coaching notes around Alim

DATE: 14 May 2019

GOAL: Come up with a platform of how I can support the teachers in their ALIM interventions

REALITY:
ALIM - Accelerated Learning in Maths. Similar to Lesson Study (ALIL - literacy)
3rd year doing it at Oruaiti
Jorja used to take students out that were below (not well below) intensive 12 weeks double dose
of maths - normal lesson, then extra 45.
Last year same with two cohorts of students. 15 minutes lessons with students, problem solving.
Front loaded students below, so they were the ‘experts’ take it back to whole class and have mixed
ability groups.
Whole school meant to be doing 15 mins ALIM four times a week with below students to front load
(apart from Kara - doing 5 x 10). Could also be any kind of need of that group - e.g. basic facts,
time tables, needed for tomorrow’s lesson. Providing the tools they need.
ALIM folder online with resources and list of students to collect pre and post data and student voice
to see dispositions.
Meant to be 10 weeks. New cohort next term.
Collecting data from 3-4 students, but other students can be included in the programme.

IDEAS FOR ALIM SUPPORT:

  • Emails to remind
  • Individually visit and discuss - to gauge where people are at.
  • Staff meetings - beginning wk1, middle wk5, end wk10
  • Share ideas for making it happen, e.g. putting responsibility on students to remind teacher,
  • buddy reading after lunch, TA use, silent reading
  • When, How, Who, What?
OPTIONS:
  1. Collect data for collaborative inquiry “What are you learning, why are you learning
  2. it and how do you know when you’ve been successful?” J.H, RV, G.H, P.G, T.T.KDone
  3. Need to check in with everyone to find out if ALIM set up and using it.
  4. how do you know when you’ve been successful When, How, Who, What,
  5. Tuesday and Wednesday week 3,
  6. Ask Diane if can have 15 minutes of week 5 (& wk1 & 10 every term) staff meeting to
  7. discuss how ALIM going - suggest could put in blogs Tuesday or Wednesday week 3
  8. Check your blog to see if you can use it yet - with Meg/ Mark Tuesday week 3

Student
What have you learnt this week in maths?
why are you learning that
how do you know you’ve been successful
Reflection
J.H
10+10+10 = 30
?
By believing in myself
This was last weeks L.I.
Both children couldn’t tell
me what this was called or why the were learning it.
R.V
63 + 10+10+10=
?
It was easy
G.H
2D and 2D shapes
So we know what 2d and 3D shapes are.
2D was flat and 3D was like a block
This was our whole class
learning for Geometry.
P.G
10 X tables
So we can learn when we are older.
I tried and I tried again.
This was last weeks homework.
T.T-K
1,10’s hundreds and thousands
?
I just know.
This was a warm up exercise.
Overall reflection
All students could tell me something they learnt this week... and all had correct answers but were a mix of warm up activities and strand learning (Geometry) and also place value.
Only 2 students could tell me
why we were learning this, students could tell me they were successful but could not explain why or give much elaboration around this.
